Diana Ross began singing as a teenager in a group with friends Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and Barbara Martin. After Martin left the group0, the remaining members went on to mega stardom as the Supremes (later changed to Diana Ross and the Supremes).
Famed record producer and label founder Berry Gordy, Jr. signed Diana Ross and her friends to Motown Records, in 1961. Diana Ross and her friends scored their first number one hit with "Where Did Our Love Go?" in1964. In all, Diana Ross and her friends scored 12 number one hits, including "Stop! In the Name of Love" and "Someday We Will Be Together".
Diana Ross broke from Supremes for a solo career in 1969 and hit the charts in 1970 with "Reach Out and Touch Somebody's Hand" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." In 1972, Diana Ross acted in the a biographical movie about Billie Holiday called "Lady Sings the Blues." Diana Ross's performance garnered her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Due to the success of the film and soundtrack, Ross went on to star in several more films, including Mahogany in 1975 and 1978's The Wiz.
Diana Ross kicked off the 1980 with her album Diana, which contained the hits "Upside Down" and "I'm Coming Out." Diana then recorded "Muscles" in 1982, written by Michael Jackson.
In the 1990s, Diana Ross made several television movies.
In 2000, Diana Ross announced a Supremes reunion tour and she hit the road with Lynda Laurence and Scherrie Payne.
Diana Ross returned to the charts in 2005 with "I Got a Crush on You" a duet she recorded with Rod Stewart for his album The Great American Songbook.
In 2006, Motown released a collection of jazz standards recorded after Ross filmed Lady Sings the Blues. Blue peaked at number-two on the jazz albums chart. Ross then released a new studio album of classic rock and soul standards titled I Love You. The album was tagged Billboard's Hot Shot Debut and it reached number thirty-two on the pop albums chart.
Diana Ross was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2007 BET Awards.
