Johnny started out singing gospel in the Gill family group at his father's church. Johnny's solo career began in 1983 when his childhood friend, vocalist Stacy Lattisaw, convinced him to record a demo, which caught the attention of the president of Stacy's record label. Gill’s self-titled debut album was released on Atlantic Records.When Bobby Brown left the New Edition to pursue a solo career, the group asked Johnny to join the group. As Johnny had already signed a contract with Motown Records, he joined New Edition on MCA records with the understanding that he would be a solo artist on Motown. His solo hits include “Rub You the Right Way”, “My, My, My”, and “Fairweather Friend”. He was also a member of LSG with R&B contemporaries Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat.
