“Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone”
KRS-ONE, originally a member of the Hip Hop crew Boogie Down Productions, is credited for setting the path for both hardcore rap and socially conscious political rap. BDP was formed when KRS met Scott Sterling, who performed as a Hip Hop DJ under the name Scott La Rock. Although“Success Is The Word”, a 12-inch single on independant Fresh/Sleeping Bag Records (released under a different group name) did not enjoy commercial success. After a few more 12-inch single releases, the “Criminal Minded” album was released on B-Boy Records in 1987.
Following the fatal shooting of Scott La Rock in 1987, Boogie Down Productions became increasingly political, more conscientious, and less violent. KRS-One was the primary motivation behind the HEAL compilation and the Stop the Violence Movement. KRS One attracted many prominent emcees to record the single “Self Destruction”.
On his first solo album, 1993's “Return of the Boombap”, KRS worked with producers DJ Premier, Showbiz and Kid Capri, and featured the Hip Hop classic ”Sound of da Police”.KRS One's latest CD "Life" was released in June 2006.
KRS also briefly held a position as a Vice-President of A&R at Reprise Records.
