If you've ever seen Prince perform live, you know the debt of gratitude he owes to those that came before him. Sly Stone, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Joni Mitchell all deserve his personal thanks. Prince's first hit Little Red Corvette featured an accompanying video that made him part of the first wave of black artists on MTV. Other hits include 1999, When Doves Cry, Let's Go Crazy, Purple Rain, exhibiting both versatility and feeling.

Prince has also long been one of the industry's most respected and sought-after songwriters. Everyone from Chaka Khan and The Bangles to Tom Jones have benefited from Prince's writing gifts.

Prince directed and starred in three movies, Purple Rain (1984), Under The Cherry Moon (1987) and Graffiti Bridge (1990).

Prince was one of the first artists to sell music directly to fans via the Internet, much to the chagrin of record labels.
