Nearly three decades on, Squeeze are as relevant today as they ever were; many of today’s
most commercially successful and credible artists, ranging from The View, Razorlight,
Fountains of Wayne, Ron Sexsmith and Kasabian have all cited them as a major influence
Providing amiably clever popular music which struck the hearts, Squeeze tickled the ribs,
moistened the eyes and tapped the feet. Difford and Tilbrook were indecently adept at
narrating a good domestic yarn over a suitably pithy couplet. Producing a steady stream of
enduring pop classics over three decades, this definitive CD containing the hits Cool For Cats,
Hourglass, Black Coffee In Bed, Pulling Mussels (From The Shell) and Up The Junction,
shows how Difford and Tilbrook crafted true pop gems. As an additional treat the album
includes two previously unreleased songs from the archives, remastered by Glenn Tilbrook –
Library Girl and Last Call For Love.
Formed in South London in 1974, with pianist Jools Holland and England’s Glory and Only
Ones bassist Harry Kakoulli, they were joined by powerful session drummer Gilson Lavis in
1976. However throughout the band line-up changes throughout the years, it was the
partnership of Difford and Tilbrook which reintroduced the craft of song writing to an eager
public. Throughout the 80s, the band enjoyed revered success, headlining Madison Square
Garden in New York in 1982 and toured relentlessly to rapturous crowds
In 1998 Squeeze recorded their self-financed final album Domino and then called it a day. It is
as melodic and as crafted as anything they ever released, and the track Without You Here
features on this long-player, fully endorsed by Tilbrook and Difford.
Difford has continued recording and is currently completing his second solo album provisionally titled Another Day Above Ground. The album will be released in the UK in the Summer 2007. On the live front, he is touring the USA for the first time in ten years with his acoustic trio during February and March. Difford will be undertaking a UK tour with his full electric band in May/June 2007 with a London date at The Jazz Cafe, Camden on 3 June 2007.
Tilbrook has been extensively touring the UK, America, Australia and Japan over the last 7
years. 2001 saw the release of his first solo album, The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook, 2004 the
release of his 2nd critically acclaimed solo album Transatlantic Ping Pong. In 2006 came the
release of a feature length documentary Glenn Tilbrook: One For The Road about life as a
touring musician on the road in the US. Glenn is currently working with his band, The Fluffers,
on his 3rd solo album due for release later this year.
In addition to Essential Squeeze, from spring and summer this year there will also be a major
reissue programme of the Squeeze back catalogue. This will start with the classic Squeeze
albums Argybargy, Sweets From A Stranger, Frank and Ridiculous, which will be reissued
in expanded and Deluxe Editions with demos, rarities and expanded liner notes. A second
batch of albums will follow in the autumn, as well as a singles box set and BBC compilation in
2008.
