Anne Murray BIO

Anne Murray, a retired Canadian singer known for her pop, country, and adult contemporary music, enjoyed a career spanning over 40 years, selling over 55 million albums worldwide. From her debut in 1968, Murray successfully blended pop and country sounds, a formula which brought her lasting success. This blending established her as a prominent figure in the music industry.

Born in Springhill, Nova Scotia in 1945, Murray developed an early interest in music, studying piano and taking voice lessons as a teenager. Her professional career began in 1965 with a role on the CBC musical variety show, Singalong Jubilee. This led to her debut album, What About Me, released in the late 1960's.

In 1969, she signed with Capitol Records. Her debut single for Capital, “Snowbird,” hit the Top Ten in America and reached the Top 40 on the British charts. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Murray maintained consistent chart success. Her last Hot 100 hit was "Now and Forever (You and Me)" in 1986, which also topped both the American and Canadian country charts.

Murray received numerous accolades, including four Grammys, a record 24 Juno Awards, three American Music Awards, three Country Music Association Awards, and three Canadian Country Music Association Awards and inductions into several Canadian and international halls of fame. She was the first Canadian female solo singer to reach No. 1 in the U.S. and the first to earn a Gold record for "Snowbird." Billboard ranked her as the 10th Biggest Adult Contemporary Artist in 2011.

Murray continued to release successful albums into the 2000s, including Country Croonin' (2002), I’ll be Seeing You (2004), and Duets: Friends & Legends (2007). She embarked on a final tour in 2007.

Murray retired from recording and performing after releasing a Christmas album in 2008. Her career had a significant impact on music and has solidified her place as a Canadian icon.
