Beck David Hansen, known mononymously as Beck, was born on July 8, 1970, in Los Angeles, California. He is the son of Bibbe Hansen and musician David Campbell, whose artistic influence shaped Beck's early interests in music. After high school, Beck moved to Washington State and began performing at open-mic events in Seattle. He later returned to Los Angeles, where he continued to pursue performance opportunities until he released his debut album, "Golden Feelings," in 1993, originally available only on cassette.

Shortly after this debut, Beck signed with Bong Load Custom Records and achieved widespread acclaim with the release of his breakout single, "Loser." The song's success attracted the attention of major record labels, and Beck ultimately signed with Geffen Records, seeking the creative freedom to explore his eclectic musical style.
