Chubby Checker, born Ernest Evans on October 3, 1941, in South Carolina, is a notable American singer and dancer recognized for popularizing dance styles, particularly the Twist. His musical journey began early, performing harmony vocals with friends and teaching himself piano in high school. A pivotal meeting with Dick Clark, facilitated by a local store owner, led to his adoption of the stage name Chubby Checker, marking the start of his professional career.

Checker's major breakthrough came with his 1958 recording of “The Twist,” a cover of Hank Ballard & The Midnighters' song. This single quickly rose to number one on the Billboard charts, making history as the first record to achieve the number one position more than once. The success of "The Twist" sparked a national dance craze, securing Checker’s place in pop music history.

In the early 1960s, Chubby Checker released several hit singles, including "Do the Pony," "Let’s Twist Again," and "Limbo Rock," accumulating a total of thirty-two hits on the charts by 1966. However, his popularity began to decline in the late 1960s, leading to performances primarily in nightclubs and oldies tours, where he remained a beloved entertainer.

In the 1980s, Checker saw a resurgence with the album The Change Has Come, featuring singles like “Harder Than Diamond.” His impact was reinforced by the Fat Boys’ rap version of "The Twist," which gained chart success.
