Darius Carlos Rucker, born on May 13, 1966, in Charleston, South Carolina, is an American singer, musician, and songwriter primarily known for his work in both rock and country music. He first gained prominence as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the rock band Hootie & the Blowfish, which he co-founded in 1986 while attending the University of South Carolina. The band's early success was marked by the release of their debut album, Cracked Rear View (1994), which became one of the best-selling albums in U.S. history and included hits like "Hold My Hand," "Only Wanna Be With You," and "Let Her Cry."

Hootie & the Blowfish achieved considerable commercial success, charting six top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and releasing five studio albums. The group took a hiatus in 1998, during which Rucker pursued a solo career. His debut solo album, Back to Then (2002), focused on R&B, but it was his second album, Learn to Live (2008), that marked his transition to country music. The album's lead single, "Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It," reached number one on the Hot Country Songs chart, making Rucker the first Black artist to achieve a number-one country single since Charley Pride in 1983.

Following this breakthrough, Rucker released several successful country albums, including Charleston, SC 1966 (2010), True Believers (2013), and Southern Style (2015). The singles from these albums, such as "Come Back Song," "Wagon Wheel," and "Homegrown Honey," further established his presence in the country genre. In 2009, Rucker became the first Black artist to win the New Artist Award from the Country Music Association, marking a significant milestone in the organization’s history.
