Jody Watley, an acclaimed American singer and songwriter, was born in 1959 in Chicago, Illinois. From a young age, she was immersed in a musical environment fostered by her godfather, the legendary Jackie Wilson, who encouraged her budding talent. Jody made her performance debut alongside Wilson at the tender age of eight and, as a teenager, gained prominence as a dancer on the iconic TV show Soul Train.

In 1977, Watley joined the popular R&B group Shalamar, where she found considerable success until her departure in 1983.
