He first gained prominence as a backing vocalist for Steely Dan from 1975 to 1980, showcasing his unique vocal style. McDonald became the lead vocalist for the Doobie Brothers, where his contributions during their most successful years included classic hits like "What a Fool Believes," "Minute by Minute," and "Takin' It to the Streets."
