During her high school years, Benatar became involved in drama and participated in productions of classic plays like Camelot. Initially aspiring to attend the Juilliard School, she ultimately shifted her focus to pursue a degree in education at the University of New York at Stony Brook.

However, Benatar's academic journey took a turn when she dropped out of school to marry and subsequently returned to her musical roots. She worked as a singing waitress and was part of a lounge band, which helped her refine her talents. In 1975, her breakout moment occurred when her first manager discovered her during a performance in New York.
