Vonda Shepard was born in 1963 in New York City, but she spent much of her childhood in California, where her love for music developed early on. Inspired by a creative family, including her father, Richmond Shepard, a mime and improvisational actor, Vonda began playing the piano as a young child. After honing her craft for several years as a backup singer, she eventually secured her own recording contract, marking the beginning of her solo career.

Shepard gained initial recognition in 1987 with her duet “Can’t We Try” alongside Dan Hill. This success paved the way for her self-titled debut album, released in 1989, which included the moderately successful single “Don’t Cry Ilene.” While her early albums saw limited commercial success, including The Radical Light (1992) and It's Good, Eve (1996), her big break came unexpectedly when she was invited to perform on the hit television show Ally McBeal. Producer David E. Kelley recognized her talent and potential, setting her career in a new direction.

Her time on Ally McBeal proved to be a turning point in her career. She became a regular on the show, playing a performer in a local nightclub, and recorded several soundtrack albums for the series. Vonda's signature track, “Searchin’ My Soul,” became the official theme song for the show and contributed significantly to her popularity. Additionally, her rendition of the classic holiday song "(Everybody's Waitin' for) The Man with the Bag," featured in the series, further enhanced her profile during the festive season.

Over the years, Vonda has released an impressive catalog of music, including nine solo studio albums and three live albums. Some notable albums following her initial breakthroughs are Chinatown (2002), Live: A Retrospective (2004), From the Sun (2008), and Solo (2011). Each project reflects her artistic growth and commitment to her craft, allowing her to explore various musical styles and themes.

In addition to her music, Vonda Shepard's personal life has flourished as well. She married music producer Mitchell Froom in 2004, and together they welcomed their first child in 2006. Shepard continues to be a dynamic performer, actively recording and touring. Her most recent album, Rookie, was released in 2015, demonstrating that her passion for music remains undiminished.
