Ru Paul is best known for his success in the music, film, and entertainment industries, and is the first drag queen to become a spokes-model for a major cosmetics company.
Ru Paul writes his autobiography. In his autobiography, Lettin' it All Hang Out (Hyperion 1995), RuPaul Andre Charles says, ``Life can be whatever you want it to be. All you have to do is make a wish."
That said, Ru Paul's life has been a fantastic voyage from a little boy growing up in an all female household in San Diego to a teenager who helped sell used cars in Atlanta, from a star of Manhattan nightlife to a chart-topping recording artist who has gone on to super-stardom as a performer, actor, author, and cosmetics spokesperson. His mother was the person he most admired while growing up. ``She was the fiercest drag queen I've ever known."
Ru Paul's 1997 album on Rhino Records, called Foxy Lady, was released to rave reviews in November. Billboard says it ``...offers a glimpse into a soulful stylist who needs to be heard far more frequently in the future." His TV talk-show--appropriately titled The Ru Paul Show --will begin its second season this spring on VH1. The contract for his highly successful relationship with M.A.C cosmetics has been renewed, and he has been renamed Co-Chairman for the M.A.C AIDS fund. And last but not least, there's his job (if one could call something this much fun a job) as a morning drive-time host for #1 rated New York radio station WKTU.
RuThe girl is workin' it! When asked what it's like to be in such demand, RuPaul simply stated, ``I feel like a hooker in a honky-tonk." But even the most glamorous of stars need a little R&R, and no one kicks back like RuPaul. The world's #1 supermodel has a sure cure for those long days of stress and tension, ``Retail therapy -- Gucci, Pucci, and Fiorucci!"
RuPaul takes his music career very seriously, which is evidenced by the mature and well-crafted performances on his Rhino debut, Foxy Lady. In this day of the ``diva," it's interesting to note that Ru didn't just sing the songs -- he wrote most of them and was intimately involved with all aspects of production. And speaking of production, RuPaul reached out to the top names in the business, people like Nick Martinelli, Eric Kupper, and Richard ``Humpty" Vission and Pete Lorimer, to name a few, to surround RuPaul's vocals with the most powerful sounds and grooves.
The six-foot, seven-inch drag megastar, who claims to maintain his girlish figure with his ``Tic-Tac diet," first made himself known to the world in 1993 when his internationally released debut album, Supermodel of the World garnered three #1 Billboard maxi-single chart hits. Through music videos, personal appearances, and countless television interviews, RuPaul's recording career skyrocketed, taking him from one hit to the other, to guest spots performing on innumerable talk shows, to stints as a featured artist on movie soundtrack albums (The Addams Family Values), as well as Elton John's Duets album. The duo recorded ``Don't go Breakin' My Heart," which was an instant smash hit throughout Europe and the United States. They then performed the song all over the world, and on international television when in 1994 they cohosted the infamous Brit Awards.
Since his debut, RuPaul has rarely been out of the public eye. Ru is forever on the road with his nightclub act, going from city to city and country to country. In November 1994, he expanded his act into an hour-long show which he previewed in Las Vegas for a pair of week-long stints at the Sahara Hotel. RuPaul was the first star to be invited back to the hotel for a second run even before he had completed his first stint.
RuPaul released his third album, Red Hot in 2004.
Rupaul released "ReWorked," his fourth album in June of 2006. It features reworked versions of songs from his back catalog, as well as new recordings. The first single is a re-recording of "Supermodel (You Better Work)".
