Brenda Holloway is an American soul singer born on June 26, 1946, in Atascadero, California. She began her music career at a young age, studying violin, flute, and piano, and singing in her church choir. Holloway made her recording debut in 1962 with the single "Hey Fool" and later signed with Motown Records in 1963, becoming the label's first West Coast signing.
Holloway's first Motown release, "Every Little Bit Hurts," peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964. She went on to release several successful singles, including "When I'm Gone" and "You've Made Me So Very Happy," which became a Top Ten hit for Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1969. Holloway's debut album, "Every Little Bit Hurts," was released in 1964, and her second album, "The Artistry of Brenda Holloway," was released in 1968.
Holloway's time at Motown was marked by both success and challenges. She struggled with the label's grooming school and was sometimes at odds with the company's staff, including Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson. Despite this, she remained a popular performer and appeared on several television shows and tours, including The Beatles' US tour in 1965.
In the late 1960s, Holloway left Motown and began recording for other labels, including Invictus and Music Merchant. She also continued to work as a session musician, recording with artists such as Joe Cocker. In the 1980s, Holloway released a gospel album and later returned to secular music, recording for Motorcity Records and releasing the album "All It Takes" in 1990.
Holloway has continued to perform and record music over the years, releasing the albums "It's a Woman's World" in 1999 and "My Love is Your Love" in 2003. She has also been recognized for her contributions to music, receiving the Rhythm & Blues Foundation's Pioneer Award in 1999. Holloway's music has endured, with several of her classic recordings being covered by other artists, including Alicia Keys and Vivian Green.
