Rod Stewart got his musical start in 1964, as a teenager in Long John Baldry's group, The Hoochie Coochie Men. The name was soon changed to Steampacket and the band was recruited to tour as an opening act for the Rolling Stones.
After being noticed by guitar god Jeff Beck, who asked Rod Stewart to front his Jeff Beck Group in 1966, Rod got his first big break.
After the Jeff Beck Group split up, Rod Stewart joined The Faces. For the next six years while fronting the Faces, Stewart had his solo career.
Rod Stewart' s first Number 1 hit came in 1971 with "Maggie May." The song was later named as one of the '500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll'.
Following a difficult Face's tour in 1972, in which jealousies of Stewart's solo success emerged, the band released their final album,'Ooh La La', His next solo album was Atlantic Crossing.
In 1978 Rod Stewart flirted with disco when he released Da Ya Think I'm Sexy. By the s, hits like 'Baby Jane' were becoming the exception, rather than the rule. Rod Stewart scored three Top Ten hits between 1982 and 1988.
Rod Stewarts star seemed destined for the stratosphere in the '90s, as he became a bonnafide mega star. He owed a debt of gratitude to MTV for this as MTV's Unplugged sessions afforded older artists like Rod a whole new generation of fans. Stewart emphasized this with his 1998 album, 'When We Were The New Boys', with covers of songs by Oasis, Primal Scream and Mike Scott.
Rod Stewart's appeal was highlighted by a new musical, Tonight's The Night, at London's Victoria Palace theatre, featuring many of Stewart's biggest hits. Most recently, Rod has successfully concentrated on singing standards from the 1930s and 1940s for 'The Great American Songbook'. His interpretation of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, the Gershwins and other great American songwriters may have met with mixed critical response, but it has been massively successful with the public. Great sales have resulted in three volumes being recorded.
Rod Stewart released his 24th studio album, Still the Same... Great Rock Classics of our Time, in 2006. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard charts.
