Alabama Shakes is an American rock band formed in Athens, Alabama, in 2009. The group consists of lead singer and guitarist Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, and bassist Zac Cockrell. The band's origins trace back to Howard and Cockrell's high school days when they began collaborating on songwriting. This collaboration eventually led to the addition of additional members, Steve Johnson and Heath Fogg, and the formation of Alabama Shakes, which started performing in local venues.

In 2011, Alabama Shakes released a self-titled debut EP that quickly garnered attention within the music industry. Their performance at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York helped elevate their profile, leading MTV to include them in their 2012 list of Eleven Artists to Watch. This recognition resulted in an offer from ATO Records, enabling the band to record their first full-length album.

The record, titled Boys & Girls, was released in 2012 and achieved immediate success, fueled by the hit single "Hold On." The song climbed the charts, and Alabama Shakes performed on several prominent television shows, including Conan, Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and Saturday Night Live. Their growing popularity also saw them take the stage at major festivals such as Bestival, Glastonbury Festival, and Bonnaroo. The album received multiple Grammy nominations, including Best Recording Package, Best Rock Performance, and Best New Artist.

Following the success of Boys & Girls, Alabama Shakes continued to solidify their place in the music industry with their sophomore album, Sound & Color, released in 2015. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and included the Grammy-winning single "Don't Wanna Fight," further enhancing the band's acclaim. By 2018, they had won a total of four Grammy Awards, including Best American Roots Performance for their rendition of "Killer Diller Blues" featured in the film The American Epic Sessions.

Alabama Shakes took a hiatus following their extensive touring cycle but reunited in late December 2024 for a surprise performance at the Druid City Music Hall in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In January 2025, the band announced on social media that they were working on new music. Additionally, they revealed plans for a reunion tour scheduled for July to September 2025, signaling their return to the music scene.

Over the years, Alabama Shakes has been recognized for their unique sound, which combines elements of rock, soul, and blues, establishing them as a significant force in contemporary music. Their rise to fame has been marked by critical acclaim and commercial success, showcasing their ability to connect with audiences across various genres.
