DJ Kool Herc is often credited with being one of the founding figures of hip-hop, known for his innovative use of breakbeats and the creation of the "Merry-Go-Round" technique, where he extended the instrumental breaks of funk and soul records to create a continuous beat for dancers.

The Rise of Rap Music

Rap music, as an integral component of hip-hop, gained popularity as MCs began to rap over the beats created by DJs. Early rap was characterized by its emphasis on rhythm, wordplay, and storytelling. In 1979, The Sugarhill Gang released "Rapper's Delight," which is widely considered the first commercially successful rap song. Old school hip-hop of the late 1970s and early 1980s was marked by its diverse range of styles and influences, with artists like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Afrika Bambaataa, Kurtis Blow, and Run-D.M.C. contributing to its growth and development. Tracks like "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force became iconic anthems of the era, addressing social issues and incorporating elements of funk, electro, and rock.
