Be it Halloween, '70s Night or any costume party and you're bound to see someone wanting to be a member of the Village People. They were a masterful pop creation, confected by two music loving Frenchmen Luke Ragusa and Mike Reynolds, 1977.
In the late '70s, thanks to Ragusa and Reynolds, The Village People were all the rage. The Village People incredible stage get-ups (a police officer, an American Indian chief, a construction worker, a soldier, a leathered biker, and a cowboy), became as popular as their catchy tunes and suggestive lyrics.
When Reynolds and Ragusa brought the Village People together, it was to showcase and perform their disco music creations and their plan was to capitalize on the burgeoning gay dance scene bubbling around the globe, particularly in New York City.
The Village People almost joined the Navy. Believe it or not, the U.S. Navy considered using the Village People hit "In the Navy" in an advertising campaign for new recruits. After providing the Village People a war ship, several airplanes, and hundreds of Navy men as extras, the U.S. Navy quickly cancelled the campaign.
Other hits include their trademark "Macho Man", "Go West", and "YMCA".
"YMCA" also has a life all its own in the House That Ruth Built. At the end of the fifth inning of each baseball game at Yankee Stadium, the grounds crew dance as "YMCA" is played, with many fans joining in unison.
The Village People have always loved to play dress-up. In 1981, with the popularity of disco waning and New Wave music on the rise, Village People replaced their on-stage costumes with a new look inspired by the New Romantic movement, and released the New Wave album Renaissance. Gay men loved it.
The Village people love sports. In 1994, the Village People joined the German national soccer team to sing its official World Cup '94 theme, "Far Away in America."
The Village People share a mutual admiration for Cher.php"> Cher. Starting in 2004, Village People performed as the opening act for Cher.php"> Cher on her Farewell Tour until it ended in April 2005.
